Our History Events Programme
Since its inception, the Farnham & District Museum Society has run a well-attended events programme of local history talks, seminars, exhibition private viewings, book launches, visits and other events. Our popular talks programme allows members to learn about local history and socialise in a friendly space. Our captivating talks programme is held at The Garden Gallery – a tranquil location in the Museum of Farnham’s garden. Talks are typically held monthly in the Spring and Autumn, starting at 2.30 pm on a Friday and lasting about an hour. They are a perfect opportunity to meet other people interested in Farnham and the surrounding district’s local history in a friendly and inclusive environment. Suitable refreshments are also provided! Details of our events programme for the forthcoming period are shown below.

Their Day has Passed: Gypsies in Victorian and Edwardian Surrey
Dr Alan Wright’s book Their Day has Passed: Gypsies in Victorian and Edwardian Surrey was published in 2017 and was followed by his Surrey Census of Nomads 1913, published by the Surrey Record Society in 2020. The books throw a fresh light on the experiences of Gypsies in Surrey at the dawn of the modern era. The talk uses a wide range of records to paint a detailed picture of people who have left few written records and shows how external forces, enclosure, urban expansion and changing economics challenged their way of life. Dr Wright says he never gives the same talk twice, as he likes to include details particular to the area he is visiting, so I am sure he will have many interesting details about Farnham.
