SUMMARY:What the Victorian Railway did for you
DESCRIPTION:Dr Richard Marks is a freelance historian based in Berkshire\, known for bringing Britain’s industrial past vividly to life. With a PhD in History from the University of Reading\, he specialises in industrial\, military\, and railway history\, as well as the history of science. In his talk\, Dr Marks invites you to look beyond the textbook tales and television tropes to discover how the arrival of the railway really affected Farnham. This talk explores the unexpected consequences of railway expansion: how it shaped local economies\, altered social patterns\, and sometimes disrupted more than it delivered. From bustling goods yards to bypassed high streets\, the railway’s impact was far from uniform — and not always welcome.

SUMMARY:D-Day Beaches Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Last October Trevor Bass’s talk covered his three-man cycle ride from Farnham to visit the D-Day beaches of Sword\, Gold\, Juno and Omaha in 2024. In August last year he and his friends cycled to the other famous beach – Utah. This (an American beach) was planned later than the others and was seen as vital if the invasion of Normandy was to be successful – securing the Cotentin peninsular and capturing the important port of Cherbourg. \nTrevor and his fellow cyclists were in France for three days\, arriving in Cherbourg and staying two nights in Carentan\, visiting memorials\, museums and scenes of conflict\, including the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc\, the famous church at St Mère Église\, the main German cemetery and a V1 launch ramp. There were also links to films such as The Dirty Dozen\, The Longest Day and The Band of Brothers. The first part of Trevor’s talk was excellent so do join us for the second part of his tour.

SUMMARY:Marmalade\, Spuds and a bag of gold: Gift giving in Tudor Southampton
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cheryl Butler has talked to us before – the last time to tell us about Frank Austen\, brother to the more famous Jane. Cheryl writes\, ‘There were 12 days of festivities for a Tudor Christmas\, but no presents till Twelfth Night – and some not until April. Gift-giving was designed to gain favours\, so that local nobles could find wine\, oranges and potatoes among their presents. Sounds like a fascinating talk with which to close our 2026 season.
