SUMMARY:Marmalade\, Spuds and a bag of gold: Gift giving in Tudor Southampton
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cheryl Butler has talked to us before – the last time to tell us about Frank Austen\, brother to the more famous Jane. Cheryl writes\, ‘There were 12 days of festivities for a Tudor Christmas\, but no presents till Twelfth Night – and some not until April. Gift-giving was designed to gain favours\, so that local nobles could find wine\, oranges and potatoes among their presents. Sounds like a fascinating talk with which to close our 2026 season.
