The lives of individual women in the ancient hundred of Farnham in Surrey, both in the town and the country, are set against the background of the role of women in the community and in society over the period six centuries.  Each chapter covers a century and includes a summary and end notes.  Principal events are sketched in and aspects of life for women at all stages of their lives, within and without the home, are investigated, and their positions as daughters, spinsters, wives and widows.  To sketch in the background for life for women, extracts from wider works are used, and extracts from original documents provides the information about the lives of local women.  Topics covered include property, health education religion immorality and charity. The publication has 69 illustrations.
