Description

The book seeks to investigate life expectancy for the people of Farnham around 150 years ago.  In the search for clues, two streets are studied for the middle Victorian period: the relatively prosperous West Street, and the relatively poor Red Lion Lane.

Topics such as income, sanitation, water supply, disease and epidemics, infant mortality, diet, occupational hazards, medical treatment, and local government, are considered.

Inevitably some statistics are involved, but the author presents them in a readable format.

The book of 160 pages is provided with 67 illustrations, an index, and two appendices.
