Abstract for “Andrew Windsor’s Almshouses”

The almshouses are located in Castle Street, and the tablet over the central doorway reads:-

“THESE ALMSHOUSES WERE ERECTED BY ANDREW WINDSOR ESQ IN 1619 FOR THE HABITATION AND RELIEF OF EIGHT POOR HONEST AND IMPOTENT PERSONS”
( According to the Gregorian calendar in use today, the year would 1620 ).

Andrew Windsor set up a Trust which, despite its ups and downs over the centuries, still manages the almshouses today, and the introduction to the book is by its present chairman.

The author was able to draw upon its wonderful collection of documents which are now deposited at Surrey History Centre.

The book of 108 pages is provided with 58 illustrations,  an index, and a glossary.
