Abstract for “Farnham
– A Memoir of the Artist Marshall Barnes”
During the 1970s Mr Frank Pullinger, of
Pullingers Stationers in West Street, published
two booklets for sale in his shop. One was
entitled ‘Viewing Farnham’ and was intended
as a pocket guide to the town. The other
was a souvenir booklet of larger format,
entitled ‘A Pen Portrays Farnham’. For illustrations
of both booklets he made use of a specially
commissioned series of pen and ink drawings
from the local artist Marshall Barnes (
1889–1963 ), which he had been selling in
the shop on greetings cards and prints.
The present volume includes drawings and
edited text by Marshall Barnes from both
original booklets, and offers a memoir of
the artist, who is still little known in
Farnham.
